초상화법 기반의 고등학교 중도탈락에 관한 인물 사례 연구

Major Features of Essentialist Portraiture: Focusing on Two Cases of High School Dropouts

본 논문의 목적은 초상화법을 적용하여 고등학교 중도탈락 경험이 있는 학생들의 사례를 소개함으로써 자료 해석과 글쓰기에 관련된 초상화법의 특징을 탐구하는 것 이다. 초상화법은 화가가 초상화를 그리듯이 연구자가 연구 참여자에 대해 글로써 심층 묘사하여 제시하는 방법으로, Lawrence-Lightfoot에 의해 처음 소개된 사례연 구의 한 방법이다. 초상화법의 특징은 연구 참여자의 ‘나’를 연구의 중심에 두고 깊 이 있게 묘사하여 연구 참여자 개인에게서 지속적이고 만연하게 부각되는 개인의 고유한 측면을 통합적으로 묘사하는데 있다. 우리는 초상화법의 특징을 보여주는 구 체적인 사례로서 고등학교 중도탈락 후 복귀한 경험을 가진 미국 고등학생 2명(매 기와 오스틴)에 대한 초상 글쓰기를 제시하였다. 매기의 초상화는 그녀의 내면에서 주요하게 관찰되는 “자아의 발견(self-awakening)”이라는 흐름이 삼촌의 죽음을 계 기로 발현된 후, 학교 복귀로 이어지는 과정과 그 의미에 대해 보여주었다. 또한 오 스틴의 초상화는 “학교가 너무 싫었던” 소녀가 중도탈락 후에 “변화에 대한 갈증”을 느끼고 다시 학교로 복귀하게 되는 계기와 여정에 대해 조망하였다. 끝으로, 두 사 례 간 해석적 논의와 기존 연구와의 비교를 통하여 초상화법에 대한 특징을 고찰하 였다.

This review study deals with major features of essentialist portraiture using two cases of high school dropouts. The methodology projects major aspects of participants regarding research theme in terms of describing a unified image of the each participant. The researcher usually articulates the meanings of the participant s experiences based on grasping major strands of his/her experiences and mapping them onto a timeline. In the course of work, the whole aspects of a person can be emerged as a unity which enables the researcher to write up the essence of the participant s experiences of dropping out and returning to school in terms of portrait. We presented two cases of high school drop-outs where the readers can appreciate the major features of portrait writing based on the essentialist portraiture. Maggie s portrait illustrates how her self-awakening evoked by her cousin s death gradually helped her inner goodness and finally come back to school. Austin s case depicts a girl who really hated school life and returned to school feeling inner thirst for her own change. At the end this paper, we presented several features of identifying unity of a person via cross-case discussion and future research issues related to other qualitative methods.
