Karyotypes of the wild species of Allium collected from 5 locations in South Korea were studied. The sizes of somatic chromosomes of wild species and cultivated species of Allium were ranged from 5.2μm to 13.9μm, and from 7.3μm to 13.5μm, respectively. The subterminal, less than 33% of arm ratio, existed in the P chromosome of cultivated species, thumbergii (2n=36, Anmin Is.), 0 and P chromosomes of the same species collected from Songkwang Temple, H chromosme of A. senescens V. minor (2n=16, Inje) and F chromosome of A. sacculiferum (2n=16, Yangju). Others were submedium or medium. One pair of satellite chromosome was found in the N chromosame of cultivated species, A chromosome of A. thumbergii (Anmin Is.) and G chromosome of A. senescens V. minor (Inje). The smallest chromosome of A. cyaneum (2n=17, Jiri Mt.) was supposed to be the fragment of a chromosome. Cultivated and wild species with 2n=32 was supposed to be the autopolyploid, while other speceis with seed to be allopolyploid.
