Genetic characteristics of maize(zea mays L.) with multiple ears and tillers(MET)

In order to investigate genetic characteristic of maize with multiple ears and tillers(MET), a total of 20 inbred lines were crossed with one inbred, IK, which has developed at the Chungnam National University for the multiple ears and tillers per plant. seven lines from various parts of Korea and five lines form the U.S. For the convenience according to the origin of inbreds. The 20 lines crossed were planted on April 10, 1987 under two different plant densities(60 cm by 30 cm and 60 cm by 60 cm). The average hybrid vigors estimated for 100 kernel weight, ear length and width were 83.4%, 38.0% and 42.3%, respectively. Regardless of plant densities the hybrid vigor for the number of tillers and ears per plant were estimated comparatively low. Phenotypic and genetic correlations among various plant characteristics were estimated, and they were different depending upon the crosses and plant densities. On the average, the 100 kernel weight and fresh weight showed singificantly postive genetic correlation with grain yield irrespective of plant densities. The heritability in broad senses was estimated and it showed variation depending upon the plant densities. The heritabilities in broad sense of kernel weight per plant, 100 kernel weight and grain yield were estimated higher than other characteristics observed.
