Old references related to agriculture in Korea Ⅳ. Kinds and varieties of industrial crops(1429-1886)

More than 230 kinds of old books concerned with agriculture were published during of Chosun-dynasty (Yi-dynasty) in Korea. Fiber crops, oil crops, dying crops and likes or taste crops were illustrated in 29 kinds of old books among those 230 kinds of old books published before 1886. Fiber crops, i.e., hemp, cotton, ramie. paper mulberry, luffa (spongegourd), flax, Indian mallow (Chinese jute), rush and black rush, included arrowroot vine were illustrated in 24 kinds of old books concerned with agriculture. Sesame, perilla, rape, castor bean and peanut plants as the oil crops were also illustrated in 21 kinds of old books concerned with agriculture. Nine kinds of dying crops included safflower, indigo plants, purple perilla plants, lacquer trees, jungdae and gardenia plants were illustrated in 17 kinds of old books concerned with agriculture published before 1886. Among the likes or taste plants, tea plant was the old crops in Korea and many descriptions were could be find in many old books concerned with agriculture, but descriptions of tobacco plants and peppermint plants were appeared on old books published in 1635 and 1766, respectively. Varietal descriptions of 4 crops, hemp, sesame, perilla and peppermint, were appeared in 5 old books among 29 old books concerned with the descriptions on special industrial crops. It could be recognized and concluded that 25 kinds of special industrial crops were illustrated in 29 old books concerned with agriculture, and descriptions of varieties were appeared just 5 kinds of crops among those 25 special industrial crops in all 230 kinds of publications published during 1429-1886. It could be also recognized that luffa, rape and castor plants were appeared in old books published in 1766, flax was appeared in old book published in 1830, and peanut was appeared in old book published in 1886, respectively.
