Studies on flowering and maturity in sesame Ⅷ. Characteristics of determinate breeding lines in sesame

Determinate varietal improvement of sesame was attempted in Crop Experiment Station. Two breeding lines of SIGH 8705-1 and SIGH 8705-2 were selected as a determinate-flowering type from the cross of Danbaek/dt 45 in 1987. These two lines were tested and investigated on their characteristics in the field condition comparing with indeterminate-flowering cultivars. The selected lines which has determinate-flowering habit were different in the flowering and capsule set habit compared to the indeterminate-flowering type. Determinate-flowering type has 10-20 days shorter flowering period and less capsules per plant compared to the counterpart cultivars. Determinate-flowering type has lippless corolla, 5-6 stamens and 3-4 splitted stigma on the apex flower. Among the yield components of determinate-flowering type, available capsules per plant was lesser, while 1,000-grain weight and grain filling rate per capsule were much higher than those of the indeterminate-flowering type. However grain quality was not much different between determinate and indeterminate-flowering type. It was expected that determinate-flowering type would be adapted in densed drill seeding and mechanical harvest in cultural practices from the viewpoint of their characteristics.
