The objective of the study was to investigate the characteristics of genetic resources of black seed coat sesame and difference of color developing of seed coat depend on capsule position on the stem. There were highly significant differences for plant height, flowering date, stem length bearing the first capsules, stem length producing capsules, capsules per plant and seed weight among 41 black seed coat sesame varieties. Large varietal differences were also detected for earlier and later coloring of the seed coat. Some varieties completed the coloring within 20 days after flowering upto 28th node’s capsules, which was 92% of the capsules per plant. However, some other varieties did not color the seed coat until harvesting time after coloring the second node’s capsules. Higher percentage coloring varieties such as dongrho, Okgu, Ibaek and Ahsan could be used as breeding materials for black seed coat sesame. The genes controlling determinate flowering plant type would be incorporated into the indeterminate flowering plant type for developing new type of black seed coat sesame. Current sesame cultivars of black seed coat should be improved in coloring by pinching off the upper nodes, which are not changed into black seed coat.
