In order to find the penetrance and the expressivity of genes associated with maize tillers among several Korean local maize lines, several inbred lines, their F₁s and F₂s were planted under different plant densities and counted the number of tillers per plant at maturity. All local lines with tillers showed 100% of penetrance regardless of planting densities and all F₁ plants crossed with IK line, which has tillers, showed also 100% of penetrate. The F₂ plants between IK and U.S.lines showed 40% to 60% of penetrance of tillering habits. The genes responsible for the tillering in IK seemed to be dominant in gene effects. The expressivities of tillering habits of IK line ranged from two to three and varied with planting densities. The expressvity of tillering habits of other maize lines ranged from two to ten. The expressivity of F₁ among Korean local lines showed quite uniform number of tillers per plant, while the F₁ between IK and U.S. lines showed very irregular number of tillers per plant.
