Growth and grain yields of male sterile and fertile inbred lines in pearl millet

Three seed-parental male-sterile lines T23DA, T85DA and ICM81A, and one pollen-parental line T186 of pearl millet were evaluated to examine different developmental responses in terms of stages of the life cycle and grain yield for hybrid seed production when grown under the different planting dates. Greatest difference in growth and developmental patterns of the T23DA, T85DA, ICM81A and T186 occurred in heading, flowering and physiological maturity. ICM81A was earlier and exhibited faster growth and development, while T23DA and T85DA were later, and T186 was the latest in growth and development. For hybrid seed production and nicking flowering time of the seed and pollen parents, the planting time of parental lines must be adjusted for higher hybrid seed production. When T186 of pollen parent would be planted on May 5, T23DA should be planted on May 23, T85DA on May 10, and ICM81A on June 2 for their highest grain yields.
