현장실무역량 중심 대학 재학생의 ‘대학교양영어’에 대한 은유분석: K대학교를 중심으로

A Metaphor Analysis of Students`s Perceptions of General English Education in a University Centering on Practical Competencies : A Case Study of K University

본 연구는 현장실무 역량을 중시하는 지역의 4년제 소규모 K대학에 재학 중인 1-4학년 총 286명이 인식하는 ‘대학교양영어’ 교과에 대한 이미지를 살펴보고, 이를 바탕으로 교양 및 영어교육과정의 전반에 대한 아이디어를 구하고자 하는데 목적이 있다. 본 연구는 2017년 9월 18일부터 29일까지 2주간 자료를 수집하였고, ‘은유분석’을 통해 도출된 ‘대학교양영어’ 교과에 대한 인식 및 이미지는 총 7가지 범주로 나눌 수 있다. 구체적인 범주 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 단계적 교육으로써 꾸준한 노 력을 요하는 평생교육, 둘째, 고통스럽고 거부하고 싶은 무의미한 교육, 셋째, 취업 및 스펙쌓기 등 사회적 인정을 기대하는 도구적 교육, 넷째, 사회적 요구에 따라 의무감으로 행하는 수동적 교육, 다섯째, 노력에 비해 성과가 낮은 비효과적 교육, 여섯째, 배움의 즐거움을 넘어 더 나은 도전으로 이어가는 자기주도적 교육, 마지막으로 세계화 역량 강화를 도모하는 글로벌 인재 교육이다. 본 연구는 대학교양영어 교과의 교육과정에 대한 아이디어와 더불어 학습자의 요구를 반영한 영어 교육이 이루 어지는데 도움이 될 것이다.

The application of metaphor analysis in general English courses at a university level is relatively new. Using metaphor analysis, it was possible to identify, make explicit and analyze students perceptions and attitudes about general English curriculum. This study aimed to investigate the English language learners perceptions about general English courses at a Korean university through metaphor analysis. In this study, 285 learners completed a questionnaire focusing on the characteristics of English courses at their university (i.e. General English courses are like .... because ....... ). For this study, 285 valid metaphors were determined, which were categorized under seven conceptual themes. The results indicated that students use various positive and negative perceptions to reflect their beliefs about general English courses. Specifically, some learners perceived general English courses as a lifelong and globalized education, self-educated learning, and an instrument for better career and social recognition having positive attitudes. However, others perceived English courses negatively and as a painful and ineffective education. These learners also showed an evasive disposition to English learning. The findings gave insight into a better understanding of general English curriculum and what perceptions motivate good English learners at the university level.
