Classification of seed-borne SMV strains and resistance to SMV in leading soybean cultivars

The seed transimssion of soybean mosaic virus was 32.1% in average in the farmer’s soybean seeds collected from the northern parts of Kyungbuk province. The 18 recommended soybeans were inoculated with each of the 18 seed-borne SMV isolates. Four cultivars, Backcheon, Hwanggum, Deogyou and Milyang, were resistant without producing any symptoms, however, three cultivars, Jangback, Bangsa and Danwon, were susceptible by the mosaic symptoms to all 18 isolates by mechanical inoculation. Three new virulent SMV strains were recognized. The SMV isolate A₂ caused necrosis in both Kwanggyo and Dankyung and Namcheon which was designated as SMV strain G5D. The SMV isolate L₂ caused necrosis in both Kwanggyo and Jangbaeg which was designated as SMV strain G5J.
