A Korean local glutinous maize collected in a series of Korean local maize studies was found to be an ecotype which has been grown by farmers for some period of time under typical cultivation practices. Even though the ecotype confirmed has no definite varietal name, the maize has a very peculiar plant characteristics like plant height, uniformity, tasselling date, tassels inside flag leaf, kernel color and kernel weight. The plant height is about 160cm in Korea and about 130cm in the Philippines due to the plant response to the short-day length in the Philippines. The ecotype has been maintained by open pollination by farmers in Kyongki and Chungnam-buk provinces. The low variation in plant height and other plant characteristics was observed either on collections from regions or trials between years. Two specific characteristics of the ecotype were low inbreeding depression when selfed, and high heterosis when crossed, suggesting that the ecotype has undergone considerable inbreeding in the farmers field. The delayed tasselling date of the ecotype might be due to long and heavy rainfalls during the June and July in Korea.
