Identification of genes for genetic male sterility such as the photoperiod sensitive type would be helpful for hybrid rice breeding. This study was carried out to identify the genetic male sterilities in rice. One hundred and fifty male sterile lines were collected from Korean farmer’s field. Among them, 97 lines were revealed as incomplete male sterile, 42 lines as complete male sterile, and 11 lines as female sterile. From the F₁s and F₂s of the crosses between the male sterile lines and their original parents, fourty lines approved to be genetic male sterile and two lines to be cytoplasmic male steril. Allelism test for the seven male sterile lines, Hapcheon ms1, Hapcheon ms18, Geochang ms1, Milyang 54ms, Milyang 55ms, Milyang 67ms and Milyang 77ms was carried out. No male sterile individuals could be found from the half-diallel testcross F₁s. Thus, the seven genetic male sterile lines tested in this study were approved to be controlled by the different genes each other. Male sterilities of the four lines Milyang 54ms, Milyang 55ms, Milyang 67ms and Milyang 77ms were reported to be non-allelic each other in the previous reports by the senior author. Three new genes for genetic male sterility in rice were identified additionally by this study. The gene for male sterility of Milyang 67ms was designated as ms-18 by Rice Genetics Cooperative in 1990, thus, the genetic male sterility genes of the lines, Milyang 54ms, Milyang 55ms, Milyang 77ms, Hapcheon ms1, Hapcheon ms18 and Geochang ms1, were proposed to designate tentatively as ms-19(t), ms-20(t) ms-21(t), ms-22(t), ms-23(t) and ms-24(t), respectively.
