A study on variations in water quality and fish catch in Jinhae Bay

Water quality and fish catch in Jinhae Bay was investigated to evaluate an efficiency of special law being implemented for the management of water quality. After establishment of the special law and sewage treatment plant in Jinhae Bay, concentrations of nutrients and occurrence of red tide were sharply decreased. However, both water quality and fish catch did not show any improvement in Jinhae Bay. Possible causes leading to decreased trend could be explained by the occurrence of oxygen depletion zone, called hypoxic zone which drives to the deterioration of benthic environment. Loss of tidal flat could also play a negative role on fishery production through the decrease in a spawning ground and habitats of small fishes.
