The conceptual design of artificial structure based on ecological characteristics to increase the marine biological resources

When the artificial structures are installed in the coastal area as a part of the marine ranching project, it is efficient to consider the ecological characteristics of the target species for the design and placement of artificial structures in the sea. In this study, design guideline for the selection of materials, structure and the site placement of artificial structure was proposed by considering the ecological characteristics of the target species. The proposed guideline was applied for the artificial structure that aims to increase catching of Sebastes schlegeli and Haliotis discus hannai, which are the target species of the Taean marine ranching project. The ecological characteristics of the target species such as water depth, sediment preference, habitat properties, feeding type, spawning characteristics, and migration pattern were evaluated using the related research papers and on-site survey. After parameterization of selected properties, the design, size, and materials and placement of artificial structures were suggested based on the ecological parameters of the target species to maximize the efficiency of artificial structures as habitat, spawning ground, wintering ground.
