Studies on seedling evaluation in seed germination testing for some food crops

In order to avoid the loss due to using poor seeds and to supply good quality seeds to farmers, it is essential to generalize seed testing in seed agencies and to understand the principles of seedling evaluation. Comparing our seed testing rules with ISTA rules, it is necessary to standardize strictly some ambiguous terms in our present seed testing rules. Most of defected seedlings showed a marked decrease in early growth being less valued planting material. Seedlings with splited coleoptile also were reduced in growth regardless of its degree. In evaluating deformed seedlings, especially weak seedlings, it seems suggestible to consider the seed length as the degree of the weakness of shortened roots, plumule or hypocotyl, provided the seedling shows no other discriminant defects.
