Variation in advanced generation of maize hybrids with Tillers

Objectives of the present study were to find any phenotypic variations in the advanced generations of the crosses between a tillering IK inbred and non-tillering inbreds like Ci66, Hi26, Ga209, B77, FR1141, FR20A and FR140. Significant differences were found within F₁, F₂ and F₃ for all the characteristics studied. The tillering inbred, IK was lower in 100 kernel weight and smaller in ear size compared with other non-tillering inbreds. All the F₁ plants showed significant heterosis in the characteristics like plant height and kernel weight, even though all the F₁’s were lower in tiller number per plant. The reason for the lower number of tillers per plant in F₁ may be due to the apical dominance for plant height. Phenotypic variations including number of tillers per plant and 100 kernel weight were observed in F₂ and F₃ generations.
