To develop a new forage species utilizing Korean native wild grass, F₁ plants were produced by aritificial crosses between wild wheatgrass(Elymus tsukushiensis L.) and cultivated rye(Secale cereale L.). Crossability of wheatgrass with rye was the highest(29.8%) in the cross with ‘Homil # 8’ and the lowest(2.5%) in the cross ‘Chunchuhomil’. Germination rate in embryo culture was 8.9% in the cross with ‘Paldanghomil’. Calli were induced from embryos which did not germinate in the rate of 13.5 % (‘Jochunhomil’), 7.5% (‘Paldanghomil’) and 7.1% (‘Duruhomil’). Only 6 to 12% of the calli regenerated plantlet via subcultures three times. Five plants were produced by embryo culture and twelve plants were regenerated from embryo-derived callus culture, which orginated all from the crosses with ‘Paldanghomil’. Hybrid plants resembled E. tsukushiensis in appearance and were completely sterile. Number of tillers, spike length, and number of florets in the hybrid plants were intermediate of the parents. Hybrid plants(2n=4x=28, SHYR) showed 1.8 to 2.3 bivalents(6~8%) and 25 to 26 univalents(92~94%) per cell at MI, indicating a remote phylogenic relationship among the genomes S, H, Y, and R.
