We have found a mutant rice from a Korean native cultivar, Guwangdo, whose leaf has a characteristics of yellow zebra on the golden background. Studies on the morphological and photosynthetic characteristics as well as the genetic analysis on leaf characteristics have been conducted. Compared to the wild type, the heading date was delayed for five days, the culm length as well as the panicle number per hill were reduced whereas no changes were observed in the panicle length, the 1,000 grain weight, and the awn length. The changes appear to be resulted by the reduced chlorophyll content in the mutant leaves. Isozyme analyses revealed no variation in the gel profiles of esterase, malic enzyme, phosphoglucose isomerase, hexokinase and β-amylase. Total chlorophylls and carotenoids were decreased in the mutant with the chlorophyll content being lowered to a greater degree. The total chlorophyll content decreased by 21.4% to 35.6% in the mutant when measured during the period between the transplant and the heading. Light reflectance of the leaf canopy was greater in the mutant, suggesting the lower efficiency in the light utilization. Genetic analysis revealed the mutant was resulted by a single recessive gene, indicating to the utility of this mutant as a isogenic line for leaf pigment mutation. Linkage analyses showed that rl-1 on the chromosome 1, gh-2 on the chromosome 2, z-3 and spl-3 on the chromosome 3, lg and nal-1 on the chromosome 4, st-2, spl-1 and nl-1 on the chromosome 5, ws-1 and dp-1 on the chromosome 6, g on the chromosome 7, tri-1, Dn and dp-2 on the chromosome 9, pgl and fgl on the chromosome 10, and la-3 on the chromosome 11 were inherited independently.
