Selection efficiency of gel consistency and relationship with amylose content and alkali digestion value in early hybrid generation in rice

Plant selection in F₂ and progeny test in F₃ were conducted during 1990-1991 to clarify the selection efficiency for gel consistency(GC), and the relationship of GC with amylose content (AC) and alkali digestion value(ADV) in early hybrid generation of two rice crosses. Plant selection for hard or soft GC in a whole F₂ population was effective, but plant selection for gel length among F₂ plants belonged to medium-soft GC was not effective. Positive correlationship was found between GC of F₂ plants anf F₃ lines, and heritability of GC estimated by F₂-F₃ regression method and selection reponse method was ranged 0.406 to 0.597. Wide variation of GC was found in F₂ and F₃ plants or lines showing high AC above 24%, but no hard GC plants or lines having low AC less than 20% were found in F₂ and F₃. Low frequency of soft GC was found among extremely high ADV F₂ and F₃ plants or lines, and gel length was increased with lower ADV in this case. Rice segregants showing soft GC, low AC and medium ADV could be easily identified and selected in F₂ and F₃ hybrid populations showing genetic variation of GC, AC and ADV.
