Genotypic effect on callus formation in anther culture of barley

These studies were carried out to investigate the genotype effect on callus formation efficiency in barley anther culture. Eighteen varieties and ninetytwo F₁ crosses were tested materials in these experiment. Two varieties and two lines with high anther culture efficiency, Dusan 12, Dusan 29 SB 821067, and SB831162 were selected by anther culture of 92 F₁ crosses and their parents. The callus formation rates of these selected varieties were ranged from 8.9% to 15.4%. When variety, Igri was corssed with Korean barley varieties, there was difference between as female parent and as male parent, that is, callus formation efficiency of the former was higher(23.1%) than that of the latter(15.8%). This suggested that there would be maternal effect on callus formation in barley anther culture. Callus formation rate of F₁ crosses was better than that of their parents, Dusan 12 and Suwon 247.
