This paper proposes to manifest the significance of Christopher Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus in relation to the fusion of comedy and tragedy as a tool of literary education. Marlowe’s Dr. Faustus is literally divided into two extremes, the ironical buffoon to deflate the boaster or unwelcome intruder who appears to know more than he actually does, such as Dick, Robin and Clown. But Marlowe suggests the protagonist’s tragic fortune through the farce of fools. They not only make a laughter with comic acts and disguises, but reflect the main character’s tragic end through their comic elements. In Marlovian comedy, the comic has became a transparency through which people set to the serious. They have a primitive and magical license, act free of law and order seemingly independent of the constrains of spare and time, and also they are untouched by the terms of reality. The wisdom of fools and trickers is the wisdom of comic world and they save the hero from his awful sin of pride. In these respects, Marlowe was the forerunner who could dramatize the conflicts between aspirations and the limits of reality with comic sensibilities of fools. In Dr. Faustus, Marlowe uses the comic and tragic scenes in turns to emphasize the tragic tension. Therefore, Marlovian farcical elements differ from the original meaning of farce, and they rather mean to didactic than farcical. They share comic relief with emphasizing tragic tension. With these reasons, Marlowe gives didactic lessons to the people that the protagonist, Dr. Faustus, who tries to overcome human limitations to the point of selling his soul to the devil, can be regarded as deserving of the heavenly judgment and damnation. And also, he dramatizes the importance of proper balance of the Ideal and the Real world through the Renaissance spirit.
