Social Capital and Regional Economic Growth:

본 연구는 사회적자본이 우리나라의 지역경제성장에 미치는 영향에 초점을 두어 분석하였다. 이를 위해 1998년부터 2013년까지 15개 광역시도를 대상으로 실증분석을 수행하였다. 사회적 규칙 및 법규의 준수 및 사회 네트워크 활동의 수준을 나타내는 6가지 변수에 대한 요인분석을 실시하여 사회적자본을 두개의 세부 요인 그룹으로 분류하였다. 이들 두개의 요인 그룹들로서 사회적 규범은 사회적 규칙 및 법규의 준수 수준과 연관되며, 사회적 네트워크는 협회 및 개인 간의 관계 활동 수준과 관련된 수준과 연관된다. 그런 다음 사회 자본이 지역 소득 성장에 영향을 미치는지 확인하기 위해 수정 된 Mankiw, Romer and Weil의 모델을 기반으로 패널 데이터 분석을 수행하였다. 실증 분석 결과 사회 자본, 특히 사회적 규범은 한국의 지역 소득 증가와 수렴에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다.

This paper focuses on the impact of social capital on regional economic growth in South Korea. The empirical analysis is implemented for 15 metropolises and provinces in Korea from 1998 to 2013. By utilizing factor analysis for the six variables representing observance of social rules and associational activity, we classify them into two smaller factor groups of social norms related to the observance of social rules and social networks related with associational activities. Then, to show that social capital affects regional income growth, we perform a dynamic panel data analysis based on a modified Mankiw, Romer, and Weil’s model. The empirical results show that social capital, especially social norms, has significant effects on regional income growth and convergence in South Korea.
