The seeds of perilla(Perilla frutescens Britton) were irradiated with 250Gy and 350Gy of gamma rays to select the mutants of short plant height, early maturing, high yielding, etc.. The selected mutants were analyzed on their agronomic characters, oil content and fatty acids composition in M₄ generation. Selected mutant lines appeared a higher or lower performance(10-30%) than the original variety in the agronomic characteristics such as plant height, number of branches and nodes, 1000 seed weight and grain yield. Some mutant lines showed 7days early or 10-20 days late in flowering compared with original variety. Grain yield of the selected mutants were ranged from 75.1㎏/10a to 160.0㎏/10a with the average yield 102.9㎏/10a. The range of fatty acid content was 23.59%-44.46% with the mean of 36.08% and the content of linolenic acid was highest among the fatty acids of perilla mutants ranged from 60.70% to 66.15%. The frequency of mutants such as short plant height, early maturing, high yielding, etc. induced by Co⁻⁶⁰ gamma radiation was higher in 350Gy than in the 250Gy irradiation.
