Omega-3 fatty acid resource crops in Korea

Identification and content of α-linolenic acid in various domestic oil resource crops screened for pre-testing to industrial use of αand γ-linoleic acid. Of the tested oil resource crops, only Evening priimrose have γ-linoleic acid and perilla, purple-perilla, soybean, rape and rice bran have α-linoleic linoleic acid. α-linoleic acid, a kind of omega(ω)-3 fatty acid, contents from main oil crops were 64.5% in perilla oil, 63.2% in purple perilla oil, 51.7% in linseed oil, 10.6, in rape oil 8.1% in soybean oil and 3.4 in rice bran oil. The order of α-linolenic acid content in fatty acid composition of oil resource plant were 63.71% in mountain perilla, 42.4% in garden balsam, 38.3% in gahurian buckthorn, 23% in Piperitumm prickleach. α-linoleic acid content of seed(Extract oil ratio×α-Iinoleic acid content of oil) was the highest in perilla and ordered perilla(28.1%) > purple perilla(20.6%) > linseed(16%) > mountain perilla(13%).
