Major growth characters and fatty acid composition of Korean native perilla collections

This experiment was carried out to collect the local native and wild perilla from farmer’s field and market through out the whole Korean peninsula in order to enlarge genetic variation of perilla. The 97 collected germplasms of native and wild perillas were classified into 7 genic and specific groups such as Perilla frutescens var. japonica Hara, Perilla frutescens var, acuta Kudo, Perilla frutescens var. crispa Decasine, Perilla frutescens var. Kudo for viridis Mak., Mosla punctulata Nak., Mosla japonica Max., and Mosla dianthera Max. based on their agronomic growth characters and botanical characters. Genetic variation of major agronomic characters in intra genic and specific was very small, however variation of these characters in inter genic and specific germplasms was quite big. Yield per hill of collected local native perilla germplasm was strongly influenced by the number of branches and panicles per hill based on the path analysis. Variation of fatty acid composition such as linolenic acid, ranged from 56.19% to 65.40% with 61.5% mean and oil content ranged from 34.8% to 44.8% with the 40.3% of collected germplasm’s mean.
