The quantitative analysis of saikosaponin a, c, d in the root of Bupleurum falcatum L. has been performed by HPLC(High Performance Liguid Chromatography). The larger size of roots showed the less saikosaponin content and the lateral roots contained about two times higher saikosaponin than main roots. This indicates the fact that the saikosaponin of root was mainly distributed in the cortex layer of roots. The roots of wild plant showed lower contents of saikosaponin than the cultivated one, but there was no difference in composition of saikosaponin a, c, d between them. The saikosaponin content of one-year old roots were higher than those of two-year old ones and the native strains revealed higher saikosaponin content in root compared with Mishima cultivar which was introduced from Japan.
