Variation of some characters in rice protoplast-derived plants

Protoplast-derived R₁ plants and R₂ population of Dongjinbyeo, were examined for variation in agronomical characteristics. In protoplast-derived R₁ plants, the ratio of polyploidity was 17.1% and the fertility was very low. In the morphological characteristics of R₂ protoclones, the mean value of culm length and panicle length was decreased, that the number of panicles was similar to the original cultivar. The mean heading date was late about three days, and the partial sterile plants (less than 50% in fertility) were 9.9% of total R₂ plants. In the variation of grain shape, length/width ratio was increased, while the mean value of thickness of grain decreased. The variation ratio of grain shape and grain thickness were 8.0 and 2.7%, respectively. In the variation of grain quality the proportion of white center was greatly increased with 46.9% of degree 3 and above.
