This study was carried out to get some basic informations on rice breeding for resistance to brown planthopper(Bph). The changes of varietal reaction to Bph were observed by different nymph densities of Bph and leaf stages of rice plant. The inheritance of resistance to Bph was investigated with F₁, BC₁F₁ and F₂ populations of ten crosses between resistant and susceptible rices. The reaction of resistant japonica cultivars to Bph was changed to moderately resistant or susceptible reactions on the test at 1~2 leaf stage and this tendency was more clearly observed by infestation of 6~8 nymphs than 3~5 nymphs per plant. But when these cultivars were tested at 4~5 leaf stage, most of the rice plants showed completely resistant reactions until 35 days after infestation. The comparison between the frequencies of resistant plants at 1~2 and those at 4~5 leaf stage showed significantly different in japonica cultivars, but not significantly different in Tongil-type cultivars. The resistance of japonica cultivars, “Milyang 64” and “Sangju 13”, was governed by same single dominant gene from allelic test. The resistance of Tongil-type cultivars such as “Hangangchalbyeo”, “Samgangbyeo” and “Gayabyeo” was controled by single dominant gene, while that of “Milyang 63” was governed by single recessive gene.
