Effect of pre-drying and storage temperature on maize pollen fertility

This study was carried out for the practical use of the short-term storage of maize pollens. Collected pollens were pre-dried in the shade for 4 hours at 22±2℃. After pre-drying, the pollen weight was decreased about 37~38.2% compared with that of original, and the moisture content was 35~43%. The pre-drying prevented the formation of pollen clusters at 4℃, but they were lumped together with freezing at -15℃. The fertility of the pre-dried pollens stored at 4℃ was higher than that of non pre-dried ones, and the pollen vigor was lasted more than a week. However the pollens stored at -15℃ showed a poor fertility. By using the above method, three inbred lines(H27-1, H28-1, Hi36a) which had long intervals between pollen-shedding and silking were maintained as the super sweet breeding lines(bt) of Hawaii origin.
