Rapid progress is being made in understanding the genetic details of plant species by the development of molecular biological techniques. Molecular cloning and sequencing of certain DNA fragments and subsequently transferring the cloned sequences into plant species have provided some aspects in overcoming the sexual barriers to exchange genes between incompatable species. As well, molecular breeding is in practive by the utilization of molecular maps. However, molecular appreciation of plant genomes is still behind to other areas due to the massive amount DNAs in most of the plant species. The gap is being narrowed by the application of molecular biological techniques in cytological preparations, which allowed us to directly in situ hybridize labelled probes to chromosomes. This paper reviews briefly the recent achievements of molecular cytogenetics in plant genetics and breeding.
