Yi Sun Sin s Descendants and Korean Independence Movements

19세기 말과 20세기 초반 한국인들은 일본 제국주의가 한국을 침략하여 식민지화하는 과정을 제2의 임진왜란으로 파악하였다. 따라서 임진왜란을 승리로 이끈 이순신이 라는 인물을 항일독립운동의 역사적 자원으로 활용하고자 하였다. 이에 따라 이순신은 항일구국의 영웅으로 부각되었다. 본고는 한국 근대 항일독립운동에 있어서 이순신의 충의 정신이 그의 후손들에 의해 어떻게 계승 발전되고 있는가에 대한 연구이다. 이를 위해 이순신의 후손으로 이도희 가문에 속하는 박안라, 이규풍, 오세라, 이규갑, 이애라, 이민호, 이길영 등 7인과 이세영, 이필희, 이규현, 이민소, 이일영 등 5인 모두 12인을 선정하였다. 12인의 항일 독립운동을 분석한 결과 다음과 같은 사실을 확인하였다. 충무공의 후손들은 조선 후기 이래 대대로 저명한 무관들을 배출한 무반의 명가였 다. 이것은 조선 왕조에서 충무공 후손들을 국가 방위의 상징으로 만들려는 정책과도 연관되었다. 특히 무공 이순신이 역임한 삼도수군통제사를 여러 후손들이 계승하는 현상도 확인되었다. 이를 통해 이순신의 후손들 사이에서는 자신들이 국가를 지키는 명예로운 가문이라는 의식이 형성되었다. 이순신의 후손들은 충무공 이순신의 후예로서 뚜렷한 자긍심을 갖고 있었고, 국가가 위기에 처했을 때 나라를 위해 희생하는 것은 조상에 대한 효를 다하는 것으로 생각하였다. 이에 이순신의 후손들 중에서 다수의 항일독립운동가가 배출되었던 것이다. 12명의 후손 중 9명은 국가보훈처로부터 독립유 공자로 포상되었다. 이순신의 후손들의 독립운동은 의병계열과 해외 무장투쟁 계열 등 다양하게 나타났 다. 사상적으로도 기독교 민족주의, 사회주의, 무정부주의 등 다양한 양상을 나타냈으 며, 좌우 통합적 운동에도 참여했던 특징이 있다.

invasion of Japanese imperialism was the same as Japanese invasion in 1592. Yi Sun Sin was a hero who repelled Japanese invasion with his wisdom and loyalty to kingdom. Korean intellectuals used his victory as historical source for future victory against imperialistic Japan. He have been respected as the great hero of national salvation by Korean people. This paper deals with the inheritance of Yi Sun Sin s loyalty to nation and great victory against Japan in the lives of his descendants. Nine men and three women were selected. They are Park An Ra, Yi Kyu Pung, Oh Se Ra, Yi Kyu Gap, Yi Ae Ra, Yi Min Ho, Yi Gil Young, Yi Se Young, Yi Phil Hee, Yi Kyu Hyun, Yi Min So and Yi Il Young. Yi Do Hee s family has seven independence fighters. Park An Ra is his wife, and Yi Kyu Pung, Yi Kyu Gap, Oh Se Ra and Yi Ae Ra are his sons and son s wife. Yi Min Ho is a his grandson and Yi Gil Young is a his great grandson. Yi Do Hee is the 9th descendant of Yi Sun Sin and his family passed national examination for high-ranking officer through four generations. Yi Sun Sin s descendants took pride in their family which have had the responsibility of national defence. Therefore they became national independence fighters at the national crisis by Japanese invasion of Korea in late 19th and early 20th century. However they are the same Yi Sun Sin descendants, their ideas for which they fought and methods by which they acted were different. Conservative Righteous Army, national democratic independence movement, socialistic movement and anarchistic movement were appeared in the national movements of Yi Sun Sin s descendants.
