Changes of protein patterns in the style after cross incompatible pollination in nicotiana

Conventional sexual hybridization of N. tabacum cv. Hicks-2 was attempted via reciprocal crosses with N. rustica cv. Rustica. When N rustica was used as a male parent, the pollen tubes did not reach the base of the style of N. tabacum and the fertilization did not occur. After in vitro pollination, pollen grains of N. tabacum germinated normally and pollen tubes grew on the surface of ovules and placenta of N. tabacum, and the other hand N. tabacum×N. rustica were showed poor germination and irregular elongation of pollen grains. It was considered that mechanism to recognize their own pollen were in the style and placenta. Changes of protein patterns in the style after pollination in cross incompatibility of Nicotiana were studied in order to investigated the association of protein to control their pollen-pistil recognition in styles. Three bands about 30KD protein were showed changes after pollination. It was considered that these protein bands correlates with the expression of incompatibility.
