Selection from γ-ray-induced leaf mutants in perilla frutescens

For the induction and selection of leaf mutations of perilla, several varieties of perilla seeds were irradiated with gamma rays of 100Gy and 200Gy. Variants were selected successively from M₂ to M₄ generations. Characteristics of the mutants in M₅ generation was evaluated. The mutants were analyzed chemically for the determination of nutritional values and RAPD analysis. Early and late flowering mutants for 10 days were selected from the varieties of Choongang, Suwon #26 and Chookyoupjaso. 31 lines of green color plants and 47 lines of purple color plants were segregated from the purple original variety of Chookyoupjaso. 57 lines of simple leaf type of oval shape and 21 lines of severe lobed leaf type of wrinkle shape were observed. The contents of vitamin A and crude lipid among the mutants were increased up to 35% and 20%, respectively. However, the contents of unsaturated fatty acids among the mutants were negligibly different. In the results of RAPD analysis, polymorphic bands were observed in the several random primers among the mutants.
