Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy(NIRS) is accepted as today’s most versatile method for rapid chemical analysis. NIRS has been used as a tool for the accurate, rapid and nondestructive assay of small grain and forage crops. The objective of this study was to establish the rapid, ease and accurate analysis method for paeoniflorin and some chemical components in Paeoniae Radix using NIRS system. NIRS used in this study was filter type instrument, Neotec 102. To obtain a useful calibration equation multiple-linear regression between the data, by chemical analysis and by NIRS method was analysed. Standard error of prediction(SEP) and simple correlation(Y) for unknown samples were calculated using obtained equation. Simple correlation(Y) and SEP for paeoniflorin were 0.905 and 0.663. The simple correlation(Y) for total sugars, starch, crude protein, crude fiber and crude ash were 0.823, 0.814, 0.792, 0.860 and 0.863, respectively. SEP for total sugars, starch, crude protein, crude fiber and crude ash were 6.830, 7.800, 0.981, 1.170 and 1.040, respectively. It was concluded that the NIRS method would be applicable for the rapid determination of paeoniflorin and some chemical components in Paeoniae Radix.
