Ten japonica rice cultivars were examined for randomly amplified polymorphic DNA(RAPD) markers with seventy-three 10-bp random primers known to amplify rice DNA based on previous studies. The finding that 36(49.3%) out of 73 primers screened were monomorphic among ten cultivars seemed to indicate that low level of genetic variation exists within japonica rices. The rest 37 primers gave polymorphic DNA bands differentiating at least one from the other cultivars. All cultivars were uniquely distinguished each other by the combination of six primers including OPB-02. Clustering of rice cultivars based on the results from the RAPD analysis was not pronounced but they fell into groups representing their origins.
