This study was conducted to develop a classification and identification system of Lycium chinense Mill. using RAPD analysis as well as morphological and agronomical analysis. Characterization of Lycium chinense Mill. has been done with morphological markers, which may not give an accurate picture because of environmental influences. A RAPD study of the relationships among eight Lycium chinense Mill. cultivars and varieties was made with nine decamer primers. Forty-eight RAPD markers were analysed by the unweighted pair group method, arithmetic average(UPGMA) cluster analysis. Eight cultivars and varieties of Lycium chinense Mill. were classified into two groups according to similarity coefficients. Cheong Yang Jaerae, Kum San Jaerae, Hea Nam Jaerae which were Korean native land varieties and Yu Sung No. 1 and Yu Sung-No. 2 which were improved varieties was classified into group 1 and foreign cultivars Japan No. 1, China No. 1 and China No. 2 were classified into group 2. Classification of cultivar types was consistent with the known genetic background of the cultivars. It can be concluded that polymorphic bands among the amplification products can be used as genetic markers and RAPD markers could be used to gain information about genetic similarities or differences that are not evident from morphological and agronomical analysis.
