This study was carried out to investigate the formation of apomictic seeds by chemical mutagens and the characteristics of their apomictic progeny(A₁) in corn. Most of ears treated with DMSO, EMS, MNU, or NaN₃ at VT stage produced sterile or unfilled ears. Only 16 percent of treated ears produced a few kernels. Treatments of chemical mutagens at silking stage resulted about 0.1% of kernel setting, while the treatment at the stage that silk was not appeared in the husk produced no kernels. Germination rate of seeds obtained by chemical mutagen treatment was lower than that of normal seeds. Germination rate of seeds obtained by DMSO treatment was higher than that of seeds treated by other three chemical mutagens. Stem and ear height of these A₁ plants showed similar variation as compared with normal plants. Growth characters of A₁ progeny induced by chemical treatment were not significantly different from mother plants, except TX hybrid lines. Bagging of A₁ plants to prevent pollination produced no kernel, although pollination with normal pollens resulted normal seed setting. Therefore, apomictic trait in corn was not dominant character.
