Inheritance of pericarp color of rice grain

Pericarp color of matured rice grain was observed individually in F₂ and F₃ of crosses between red and light yellow pericarp varieties, and between black purple and light yellow pericarp varieties to obtain the information for useful gene source of colored pericarp. F₂ segregation mode of pericarp color in twelve among thirteen crosses of red/light yellow pericarp was fitted to 9 red : 3 brown : 4 light yellow, and same segregation ratio of 9 black purple : 3 brown : 4 light yellow was found in F₂ of three among four crosses of black purple/light yellow pericarp varieties. When red pericarp rices were crossed with light yellow pericarp ones showing red or purple hull color, pericarp color in F₂ population segregated into 3 red : 1 light yellow or light brown in five crosses. Eighty four percent of F₃ plants showed red or brown pericarp color, and more than ninety percent of F₃ plants had light yellow pericarp color in progeny populations of red/brown pericarp and light yellow pericarp F₂ plants, respectively. The results obtained in this study indicated that two dominant genes control red pericarp of parental varieties, six Korean local and two introduced, and black purple pericarp of two foreign varieties was also governed by two dominant genes.
