Inheritance of fruit color, and sugar and ascorbic acid content in melon(Cucumis melo L.)

This study was conducted to obtain genetic information for breeding of high quality hybrid melon. Some lines with particular fruit colors were crossed and tested on the genetics of fruit color and sugar and ascorbic acid content and their correlations in parents and their Fls. White rind color was dominant to yellow rind color. For fruit flesh color, green or yellow color was dominant to white color, and yellow color was dominant to green color. Sugar content and ascorbic acid content of hybrids in comparison with their respective parents were different from one to another cross combination, indicating that the inheritance mode is not simple. No correlations found between color intensity and sugar content, color intensity and ascorbic acid content, and total sugar content and ascorbic content. However, highly significant correlation was found between sugar content and sucrose content.
