Combining ability of F₁hybrids for forage in sorghum species

This study was conducted to obtain basic information on forage sorghum breeding at forage crop field of livestock experiment station in 1988. Combining ability was analyzed within crossing groups of sorghum×sweet sorghum and sorghum×sudangrass. Estimates of variance for general combining ability were much greater than those of specific combining ability in all growth characters. Based on combining ability test A 1202 as common female for sweet sorghum and sudangrass crossing groups, and IS 3312 as common male for sudangrass, and Rurier var. as male for sweet sorghum crossing group were promising parents for forage F₁ hybrid sorghum. Crossing combination of ATx 399×Rio in sweet sorghum crossing group, A 1202×Greenleaf in sudangrass crossing group showed the greatest specific combining ability in total digestible dry matter yield. Total digestible dry matter yields of A 1202×Rio, A 1202×IS 3312 and A 1202×Green leaf were 1,672kg/10a, 1,412kg/l0a and 1,366kg/10a, respectively. Total digestible protein yields of ATx 399×Rio and A 1202×Green leaf were 201 kg/10a, and 195kg/10a, respectively. However, they showed lower yields than standard varieties.
