To get basic information on varietal difference of low temperature germinability and seedling establishment, fifty rice genotypes with different origin were tested under various temperature condition and soil depth. Disirable temperature for screening low temperature germinability was 12℃~15℃. Ten Korean improved rice varieties showed high germination ratio above 80% at 13℃ for 30 days, nearly equal to six Korean weedy red rices and introduced rice materials such as Newbonnet, M-202, Italica livorno from USA, Tsukinohikari from Japan, and CNRRI 26(237) from China. The Average germinnation duration and germination coefficient of most Korean improved rices were relatively longer and lower compared with introduced ones. The average percentage of seedling establishment was decreased along with soil depth. Milyang 117, Dongjinbyeo and six Korean weedy red rices were distributed on the range of 48~59%, but seven introduced varieties from USA were distributed on the range of 15~46% of seedling establishment in 4cm below soil surface. The varieties showing mesocotyl elongation above 9mm were Milyang 95, Gayabyeo, Samgangbyeo, Uljuaengmi, Yeongdongaengmi, Onyangaengmi, Newbonnet, and Italica livorno. There was highly significant positive correlation between the percentage of seedling establishment and germination ratio, germination coefficient. Mesocotyl length in 4cm below soil surface was highly negatively associated with the average germination duration (r=-0.499), positively associated with germination coefficient (r=0.290), and highly positively correlated with the seedling estabilishment in 8cm below soil surface (r=0.447).
