Morphological variation and characteristics in wild soybeans(Glycine spp.)

This study was conducted to understand morphological variation and characteristics in various species of the genus Glycine. The cluster analysis based on correlation coefficients among twenty-five morphological characters was carried out for fourteen species of Glycine. A great deal of variation in the morphological characters such as seed weight, petiole length, unifoliate leaflet length & width, unifoliate leaflet length (L)/width (W) ratio, trifoliate leaflet width, and trifoliate leaflet L/W ratio were recognized. The subgenus Glycine and Soja were clearly classified by the characters of seed weight and growth type. Some typical morphological characteristics were observed in the subgenus Glycine species; a tri-compound leaves at the unifoliate leaf node in G. cyrtoloba, the extremely high pod L/W ratio in G. clandestina, G. tomentella, and G. canescens, the extremely long and narrow leaves in the unifoliate leaf of G. canescens and the compound leaves of G. clandestina, G. arenaria, G. canescens, and G. curvata, and the extremely small leaflets in G. latrobeana. The cluster analysis based on twenty-five morphological characters revealed the high correlations between pod length and width, pubescence color and type, unifoliate leaflet type and L/W ratio. Also, there was recognized considerably close association among petiole length, trifoliate leaflet length and width, seed weight, unifoliate leaflet length and width, and growth type.
