To develop genetic markers for the phylogenetic analysis of taro accessions, taro genomic DNAs were randomly amplified with the UBC primers by polymerase chain reactions (PCRs). One hundred UBC random primers were screened for the randomly amplified polymorphic DNAs (RAPD), and 87 RAPD markers were obtained from the 20 primers selected. Among the RAPD markers those obtained from the primer #223, #232, #244, #265, #266, and #269 were the most useful for the analysis of genetic diversity of the taro accessions. Genetic similarity matrices of RAPD profiles were generated via coefficients of variation and the data were processed by the cluster analysis (UPGMA). The accessions were classifed into 10 subgroups with the coefficient of similarity value of 0.895. Domestic and foreign accessions were clearly separated. The most of domestic accessions were included into subgroup 5 and those domestic accessions showed close genetic relationship, except Cheju #1 which was the accession most distantly related to the other domestic accessions. The second distantly related to the other accessions was Taiwan 1.
