To examine the possibility of selecting the rice variety adaptable in North Korean area under South Korean environment, the classification of meteo-ecotype for some North Korean varieties was carried out by the flowering characteristics in the field and the green house of National Homam Agricultural Experiment Station, located in the southern plain area of South Korea, in 1995. Among the rice materials, Seonbong 9 was identified to have very short basic vegetative phase (BVP), none photosensitivity phase (PSP) and medium thermo-sensitivity phase (TSP). Pyeongyang 18 and Pyeongbuk 3 were classified into short BVP, medium PSP and long TSP group, indicating the similar meteo-ecotype to an early maturing South Korean variety, Odaebyeo. Among the medium BVP group, Yeomju 4 and Hamnam 15 were classified into the medium PSP and medium TSP group, and three varieties including Sijung 10 were classified into the long PSP and short TSP one. Among the long BVP group, Pyeongyang 8 was classified into the short PSP and long TSP one, and Yeomju 1 was classified into the long BVP and long PSP group similar to a medium maturing South Korean variety, Gancheogbyeo.
