Original type of Lily-turf(Ophiopogoneae Tuber), which is used for oriental medicine in Southern Asia including Korea, have been argued before to now according to increment of trade in agricultural products. The species of Korean Lily-turf have been classified as Liriope spicata Loureiro before, whereas those of Japan and China have been grouped as Ophiopogon japonicus Ker-Gawl and O. chekiangensis Kimura et Migo, respectively. To clarify the species of cultivated Lily-turf (Ophiopogoneae Tuber) in Korea, the wild and cultivated strains were inverstigated in the chromosome number. Generally the strains without stolons were tetraploids (2n=4x=72) and those with stolons were hexaploids (2n=6x=108), suggesting the species of Ophiopogoneae had been evolved to the stoloniferous and hexaploidy plants. By the comparision of taxonomic characteristics of cultivated strains in Korea, the species of original plant was deduced as Liriope platyphylla Wang et Tang, which is tetraploidy in chromosome number, non-stoloniferous and black in fruit color. As for agronomic characters of the native cultivars, they showed 35.2~45.2 cm in plant height, 5.4~8.0 in number per hill, 29.1~33.9 mm in tuber length and 7.4~8.8 g in dried tuber weight per hill.
