The Naval Forces Strategies and Tactics of Yi Sun Sin

이글은 이순신의 수군전략과 전술을 분석하기 위한 것이다. 이를 위해 먼저 전략과 전술의 개념, 이순신의 수군전략, 이순신의 수군전술, 이순신 전략ㆍ전술의 교훈과 시사점 등의 순서로 분석한 후 결론을 도출해 보았다. 이순신(忠武公 李舜臣)은 일본의 도요토미 히데요시가 명분 없이 일으킨 임진왜란으로 나라가 풍전등화(風前燈火)의 위기에 처했을 때 투철한 조국애와 뛰어난 전략ㆍ전술로 민족을 왜적으로부터 방어하고 격퇴시킨 구국의 명장이다. 그는 임진왜란 시기 제승전략과 불패전략(현대적 의미의 현존함대전략 등을 활용한) 및 다양한 전술을 구사하여 조선 수군을 지휘ㆍ통솔하고 침략자 왜군을 물리치는데 가장 큰 공을 세웠다. 이순신은 여러 차례에 걸친 출동을 통해 45전을 싸워 무패의 신화를 낳았다. 현대적 의미에서 이순신의 수군(해군)전략을 검토하면 이순신은 임진왜란초의 1~2차 출동까지는 현존함대(現存艦隊. Fleet-in-being)전략을 수행하였고, 3차 출동 한산대첩과 4차 출동인 부산포해전을 통해 결정적으로 함대결전전략을 시도하기도 했다. 이순신의 수군전략은 승리를 위해 은밀하게 그 유리한 조건을 사전에 만들어 놓는 제승지형 구비전략 또는 제승전략, 그리고 제한된 자원을 가지고 최소의 피해와 희생을 통해 ‘이기거나 아니면 최소한 지지 않는’ 불패전략에 바탕을 두고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 전략목표를 달성하기 위해 ①선제공격전술, ②함포포격전술, ③ 화공전술, ④진법전술 등 다양한 전술을 전투상황에 맞게 자유자재로 적절히 구사하여 주요해전에서 연승무패의 위업을 기록했다. 이순신은 세계전쟁사상 유례가 없는 연전연승을 기록한 뛰어난 군사전문성과 인품을 지닌 군사전략가였다. 지식정보화시대라고 일컬어지는 지금의 시점에서도 보아도 이순신의 연승무패전략, 정보중시전략, 거북선과 같은 당시 신무기의 개발을 통한 군사혁신마인드, 소통과 필사즉생(必死卽生)의 리더십 등은 그 중요성이 줄지 않는 많은 교훈과 시사점을 우리에게 주고 있다. 그의 전략ㆍ전술의 바탕은 나라사랑과 백성사랑에 있었으며, 이러한 사랑이 그의 중요한 전략사상이자 전략ㆍ전술 그 자체이기도 했다. 그는 최후의 순간까지 구국의 일념으로 나라와 백성을 위해 몸과 마음을 바친 위대한 군인이자 영웅으로서 한국인의 마음속에 영원히 살아 있게 될 것이다.

This paper aims to analyse the naval forces strategies and tactics of Yi Sun Sin. For the purpose of that, this paper searches for the concepts of military strategies and tactics, Yi Sun Sin’s naval force strategies and tactics, the superiority and implications of Yi Sun Sin’s naval force strategies and tactics, etc. In 1592 Toyotomi Hideyoshi, the Japanese military leader who had just reunified Japan, sent a large force to Korea in an alleged attempt to invade China. The Korean land forces suffered a series of defeats, but Korean naval forces, led by Admiral Yi Sun Sin, secured full control of the sea. Yi Sun Sin recorded the unprecedented victories that could not been found anywhere in the world history. What are the factors that made Chosun naval forces achieve triumph over major naval battles during Imjin War(Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592)? There could be many requisites including possession of different weapon systems. However, Chosun’s maritime strategy or Yi Sun Sin’s naval forces strategies and tactics are also one of the important requisites. More precisely, the reason of Chosun’s navy victory in many naval battles is that Admiral Yi Sun Sin made good use of excellent battle ships and arms, appropriate strategy and tactics, and leadership correspond to the war situation. Admiral Yi’s strategies were the ever-evolving victory strategy and the winning or undefeated strategy. He had developed a variety of tactics such as preemptive attack, attack by turtle ship, attacking with fire(or ship cannon), various attack formation(for example Hakikjin) etc. Admiral Yi Sun Sin was a great soldier, a man of sincerity, courage and principle, with a warmed-hearted personality. His strategies and tactics were based on the love for his country and the people and, even in today, are giving us many lessons and implications. His devotion and loyalty to his country was so great that his spirit lives forever in the hearts of the Korean people.
