Jeolla JwaㆍUsuyeong people Who helped Yi Sun-sin

임진왜란 때 이순신을 도운 전라좌ㆍ우수영 사람들은, 문헌 기록에서 확인되는 사람만 대략 540여명에 이른다. 이토록 많은 전라좌ㆍ우수영 사람들이 임명직으로 혹은 자발적으로 이순신 막하에 와서 그를 도왔다. 임진왜란 때 수많은 백성들이 문무관리들 밑에 종군하는 것을 극력 회피하고 의병으로 나갔다. 그렇지만 이순신 막하에는 자발적으로 많은 사람들이 모여들었다. 이것은 이순신이 부하들을 법도에 어긋나지 않게 통솔했기 때문에 가능한 일이었다. 이순신은 자신에게 허물을 보였던 부하 장수들일지라도 그가 해전에서 힘껏 싸우면 절대 편견을 갖지 않고 공정하게 전공을 평가했다. 이순신의 이러한 공정한 전공 평가는 부하들을 진정으로 감복시켰고, 그가 리더로서 힘을 발휘할 수 있게 해주었다. 이순신 예하의 말단 장교들인 군관이나 권관 등도 해전의 전공으로 높이 승진했다. 이러한 사실은 많은 사람들에게 이순신 밑에서 열심히 임무를 수행하면 반드시 공로를 보상받을 수 있다는 믿음을 주었다. 결국 이순신의 공명정대하고 불편부당한 지휘통솔이 자신의 예하로 사람들을 모이게 했고, 또한 부하들로 하여금 그를 따르게 만들어, 그의 위대한 해전 승리를 이룩하는 밑바탕이 되었다.

Jeolla jwaㆍusuyeong(全羅左ㆍ右水營) people, who helped Admiral Yi Sun-sin during Imjinwaeran(壬辰倭亂, the war of Japanese Invasion upon Korea from 1592 to 1598), reached about 540 including those who were confirmed through literature record. This way, many Jeolla jwaㆍusuyeong people came to be Admiral Yi Sun-sin’s subordinates and helped him, by appointment or voluntarily. During Imjinwaeran, many people made every effort to evade war military under civil and military officials and participated in the loyal troop. Admiral Yi, Sun-sin evaluated war contribution fairly without prejudice if only the subordinates exerted their best at the naval battle, even if they had shown faults to him. This way, Admiral Yi, Sun-sin’s fair evaluation on war contribution sincerely inspired the subordinates, which again helped him to exert his power as a leader. Military officer or authorized officer, etc. who were low-ranking subordinates of Admiral Yi, Sun-sin were also highly promoted due to their contribution to the naval battle. This fact won many people’s confidence that their contribution could be surely rewarded when they faithfully perform their duty under Admiral Yi, Sun-sin. Eventually, Admiral Yi, Sun-sin’s fair and impartial leadership made people gather under his command, also, which made his subordinates follow him, finally, became the foundation to achieve his great victory in naval battle.
