A Comparative Study between A Hen Away from Inner Court and The U gly D uckling

This study is a comparative analysis of the structures and the mother’s child-rearing attitudes betweεn The Ugly Duckling(1844) by Hans Christian Andersen and A Hen Away from Inner Court by Hwang Sun-me. This research has a meaning as a pre-stage to get into a serious study on the influence of the western children literature on the modern Korean children literature since 19th century. The Ugly Duckling is one of the greatest western children works and A Hen Away from Inner Court is a recent Korean work and enjoys pop띠arity with readers. Firsdy, for thε structures of two works, the coincidences of the episode and the character wer<ε compared separately through the examples of similarity between them. It shows that many paπs of the episode and the character are similar. However, the way of mother’s child-rearing, which is a main charaιteristic common to two works, is greatly differenr. Secondly, 1 compared two works on the basis of the types of mother’s ch&iacute;ld-rearing attitudes by E. S. Schaeffer(1959). While the mother in The Ugly Duckling shows the affectionate and autonomous attitude for the child, 산le mother in A Hen Away from Inner Court shows the affectionate and regulative attitude. Therefore the result means that the main character in The Ugly Duckling is constructed around the young generadon and A Hen A way from Innεr Court is constructed around the parent gεneration.
