‘작은 결혼식’의 대두에 따른 의식 변화와 실천:

A Case Study on the Change of Awareness and Practice according to the Rise of Small Wedding

현대 한국사회의 결혼은 과도한 상업화와 획일화로 인해 많은 문제를 야기하고 있다. 젊은 신혼부부가 감당하기에는 부담스러운 비용, 그리고 몰개성적이고 획일적인 예식 스타일 탓에 대다수 한국인은 결혼식에 수반되는 일련의 과정을 부정적으로 인식한다. 이 같은 상황에서 대안적인 형태로 주목받기 시작한 것이 바로 이른바 ‘작은 결혼식’ 혹은 ‘스몰웨딩’이다. 기존의 획일적인 형태를 벗어나 상대적으로 비용부담이 작고 자신만의 개성을 살릴 수 있는 결혼식을 올리고자 하는 움직임은 결혼을 둘러싸고 등장한 새로운 현상 중 하나이다. 이 논문은 이처럼 결혼식의 탈정형화를 추구하는 자녀 세대와, 전통과 친족 의무를 중시 하는 부모 세대 간의 갈등에 관한 사례연구이다. 기존의 예식 형태를 부정적으로 보는 젊은 예비부부 사이에서는 ‘작은 결혼식’에 대한 인지도와 소망이 높아졌지만, 이를 정작 실천에 옮기는 데에는 많은 어려움이 존재한다. 한국사회에서 결혼이라는 의례에는 부조금이나 예물, 예단과 같이 부모 세대의 이해관계가 밀접히 연관되어 있으며, 준비과정 전반에 부모의 경제적 기여도가 높은 탓에 자녀 세대가 주도권을 잡기 어렵기 때문이다. 이런 상황에서 자녀 세대는 상대적으로 변화를 만들기 쉬운 예식 당일의 절차에 집중하여 나름의 방식으로 결혼식의 탈정형화를 추구한다. 본 연구는 이와 관련한 사례들을 분석하여 부모 세대에게 익숙하지 않은 탈정형적인 예식에 대한 자식 세대의 선호가 세대 간의 타협을 통해 중간지점으로 수렴되는 양상과, 그 배경으로 작용하는 사회문화적 맥락을 고찰한다.

The marriage rites in the contemporary Korean society has a lot of problems because of excessive commercialization and standardization. The most Koreans have negative awareness about the process of marriage due to high costs and a uniform style of a wedding ceremony. In these circumstances, so-called the Small Wedding has begun to receive social attention. The movement to hold a wedding which cost less and departs from a traditional style is a new phenomenon. This case study examines conflicts between the young generation who are in pursuit of the Small Wedding and the parents generation who are more concerned with the tradition and duties among relatives. The young soon-to-be-married couples who want the Small Wedding have a lot of troubles to put it in practice, because of that the interest of parents, like wedding presents or a monetary gift for wedding, connects to the wedding as a ritual in Korean society. Therefore, the young generation seeks the destandardization of marriage rites focusing on the process of the very day of wedding that has room for change. This study explores the socio-cultural context which effects a compromise that solves the conflict between the preference for an ex-formal wedding of the young generation and the discontent of parents.
