Economic Adaptation of Residents in the Cultural Properties Protection Zone - A Focus on the Joksaem Area in Gyeongju-

This study oudines thε various economic behaviors of residents in the Cultural Properties Protection Zone. Residents of this zone are subject to a widε range of restrictions and circumstance changes that are basεd upon growth background, education, personal experience and financial status. The study focuses on the ‘Jokaaem area in Gyeongju, which was the capital city during the Shìlla period. Data were collected through personal inteπlews with pεrsons in street shops, an outdoor market and residents. The data collected included information on the informants’ growth process, job changes, coping with the economic changes and their future plans. The study provided information on both residents and rourists. This information shows that the JokSaem area has been degrading into a slum for years, possibly a result of various regulations and policies. The residents of the Joksaem area have had to cope with rε gulations and policies that have negative!y 따fected their circurnstances. Shopkeepers in particular have been affected. In fact, some of the large tourist shops, especially large scale Korean restaurant have extended their businesses continually, irrespective of the economic changes. The population of the Joksaem area contains a high proportion of small businessmen, casual laborer and the unemployed. They can generally be classified as the poor due to thε economic crisis, restructuring and unemployment. The polarization of the social stratification during the post industrial society is illustrated through the example of residents in the Joksaem area.
